2019 Conferences

  • 4th World Congress on Disaster Management - Mumbai

VPC’s President, Deepa Srinivasan, presented at the 4th World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai. The Conference was attended by over 1,000 attendees from all avenues of government, academia, business and NGOs. Ms. Srinivasan presented two sessions at the 4th WCDM: (1) Hazard Mitigation and How Communities in the United States Improve Resiliency of Historic Properties; and (2) How Riverine and Coastal Communities in the United States Measure and Prioritize their Risk. The goal of the presentations was to: (1) Encourage jurisdictions that by undertaking a coordinated, comprehensive look at the risks, properties, and the actions that could be implemented, they can endeavor to keep valuable historic/cultural resources safe, and the properties as “useable” as possible, for as long as possible, and (2) that it is key to tie the risk assessment and vulnerability analysis to implementable hazard mitigation actions. Developing a sound hazard mitigation strategy with actionable items serves as the long-term road map to building resiliency and reducing risk.

  • Global Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Governance and Disaster Management - Delhi

VPC President, Deepa Srinivasan, presented at the 2019 Global Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Governance and
Disaster Management hosted by the Special Centre for Disaster Research (SCDR) at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New

of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Robotics in disaster planning, preparedness, and community
resilience. VPC’s presented in the AI in Local Governance category, which consisted of eight people from five different
countries. In her presentation regarding the use of AI/ML for plan integration, titled Can Plans Really Talk? Integrating Plans and Strengthening Communications Through AI, the focus was on getting plans to ‘talk to one another’ to avoid
